GOALS AND DIRECTION OF THE COURSE:

 

 
 
 

SPAN 164 fulfills the fourth semester language requirement. As such, you are expected to demonstrate a proficiency by the end of the semester which will enable you to begin work in more advanced language problems or in an introductory literature course.

SPAN 164 is an intensive course with broad-ranging goals. You will be expected (1) to master fundamental grammatical structures; (2) to increase vocabulary; (3) increase reading comprehension through the development of the following skills--paraphrase, inference from context, reading for details, working with thesis ideas, and translation; (4) improve conversational and written skills in our discussions and compositions concerning the readings; and (6) finally, become familiar with a sampling of Spanish and Spanish American authors.

GRADING:

(*Includes compositions, quality of in-class participation, attendance, homework, short quizzes, etc.)

** All work on tests, quizzes, and compositions is considered pledged. However, you may--and are encouraged to--seek help or work in groups on daily reading and grammar assignments.

ATTENDANCE:

Improving language skills takes time and determination! Class attendance is strictly imperative. Given the nature of the course, no unexcused absences are allowed. Excessive absences (4 or more), whether excused or unexcused, can result in a grade of "F" at the professor's discretion.
