Religion and the Civil Rights Movement

 

 

The Civil Rights era was one of the most dynamic and influential periods of the African American experience.  At the heart of the movement lay many of the values and principles espoused by the Christian Church: equality, justice, acceptance, and love in the face of hatred and violence.  Accordingly, religious leaders from many faiths and races were integral forces in spreading the movement and championing the cause of racial equality.  Below are discussions of several of the most influential organizations and leaders, without whose sacrifice and dedication many of the advancements gained as a result of the civil rights movement may never have occurred.
