Religion
and the Civil Rights Movement

The Civil Rights era was one of the most
dynamic and influential periods of the African American experience. At the heart of the movement lay many of the
values and principles espoused by the Christian Church: equality, justice,
acceptance, and love in the face of hatred and violence. Accordingly, religious leaders from many
faiths and races were integral forces in spreading the movement and championing
the cause of racial equality. Below are
discussions of several of the most influential organizations and leaders,
without whose sacrifice and dedication many of the advancements gained as a
result of the civil rights movement may never have occurred.
