Experience

Assistant Professor, Washington and Lee University, July 2004 – Present

Instructing courses in physics and engineering at the undergraduate level.  Performing research in the area of laser diagnostics for direct application to high-speed gas flows.  Advising undergraduate research assistants in basic diagnostics and associated data reduction.

Postdoctoral Research Associate, University of Illinois, February 2003 – June 2004

Utilized novel laser diagnostic techniques, both experimentally and theoretically, for measurements in compressible flowfields.  Investigated fundamental supersonic flowfields of practical interest to increase the understanding of the effects of compressibility on turbulence.

Part-Time Faculty, Parkland College, September 2003 – December 2003

Instructed undergraduate engineering mechanics course in dynamics.  Responsibilities included teaching lectures and creating cooperative-learning, conceptual experiments.  The interactive experiments involve software simulations of practical problems and numerical solutions of advanced problems.

Research Assistant, University of Illinois, January 2000 – February 2003

Examined an underexpanded jet with a new, nonintrusive, laser-diagnostic measurement technique to provide simultaneous measurements of pressure and temperature.  Developed theoretical model for generation of resonant spectra of nitric oxide for use in rapid detection of air pollutants and toxins.

Consultant, Educational Testing Service, May 2001 – May 2003

Developed questions for the SAT II: Mathematics Subject Tests in the areas of algebra, coordinate and three-dimensional geometry, and trigonometry.

Teaching Assistant, University of Illinois, May 2001 – August 2001

Assisted in the revision of the undergraduate introduction to mechanical engineering course.  Duties included revising the course manual, website, computer exercises (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and KaleidaGraph), mechanical dissection exercise, and noise level experiment.

Teaching Assistant, January 2001 – May 2001

Taught an undergraduate fluid dynamics laboratory section.  Prepared lectures covering the experiments performed, supervised the student experiments, graded the students’ reports, and mentored an introductory design project.

Research Assistant, University of Illinois, May 1997 – January 2000

Investigated the possibility of extending the capabilities of coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering to obtain a velocity component along with pressure and temperature by employing counter-propagating pump beams.  Performed a numerical study of the technique’s sensitivity to velocity and tested two different experimental setups.
