Gen. Robt. E. Lee
Dr Sir
Please find enclosed receipt from Express Co. for package containing Carlyle's, Frederick the Great (5 Vols)-
I have today put into hands of the publisher (Blelock & Co) the matter of Dr Dabneys Life of Genl T. J. Jackson. It is published for the benefit of the widow and the publishers and our friends here generally desire a short preface or introduction by you. Blelock & Co say it will increase the profits to Mrs Jackson one Thousand Dolls. It may be short, very, and as it will require from you so little labour, and will probably be the means of enhancing the amt Mrs J. may obtain in this way I know you will not refuse; the only motive I will urge - It is enough - I wrote yesterday to Dr Dabney on this point and presume he will communicate with you in the premises -
With profound respect
I am
Yours very truly
T. M. Niven
