Intelligence and humanity obliterate all mere party lines – I forward
to you by this mail a small work which I hope you will find time to look at.
It would give me great pleasure to know that you had read it.
The war is not over and whether we, by our ignorance and recklessness are
to disappoint the trembling hopes of the best friends of Liberty every where, or
to emerge from the chaos we are now in, will depend, I think, upon the humane
efforts of the few individuals who are outside of party lines and who can see
the justice there may be in any man or set of men.
