Gen. R. E. Lee

            Pres. Washington College

                        Lexington, Va.

My Dear Sir:

It is my privilege to introduce another of my young friends, Mr. Frank Armstrong, who will come under your control and influence as a student in Washington College.  Like the other young gentlemen from this place Mr. Armstrong has to regret the interruption in his studies occasioned by the war; but I hope by diligence and close application he will be able to “redeem the time.”  Although of manly stature he is youthful in years.  I trust he will show himself manly in his disposition and habits, and by assiduity and correct deportment secure your favorable notice.

                                                            With highest consideration

                                                                        Your Obt. Servt
