My dear Sir

I have been informed by the Secy of the Treasry that my application for the restoration of Smiths Island to me as Executor of Mr G. W. P. Custis, has been denied; and I have this day written to Mr Hamilton S. Neale, requesting him to bring an action of ejectment against the parties holding the Island & to take all necessary steps for its recovery.  Should he under all the circumstances of the case, think it advantageous to pursue this course, may I ask you to join him in the measures he may think proper to adopt, & aid him by your council-
