My Dear Sir,

Your son has taken this session the Degree of Master of Arts, the highest honour conferred by this Institution.  In consideration of his Distinguished grade among the Class of A. M.s the Faculty have given him the appointment of Resident Master, in pursuance of a provision of the Colege (sic) Authorities assigned to foster a literary spirit among our students.

My design in writing is to advise that he accept this appointment.  The consequence of his youth it seems to me (page 2) desirable that he should continue his scholastic studies two or three years longer, in order to perfect his present attainments and to gain still more extended knowledge.

The appointment is an honorary one and the Faculty are authorized to select for it three of the Masters of Arts every year, whose duty it is to prosecute their studies in at least some one direction, and to teach in the College on hour per day, if the Faculty think it proper to require it; in consideration of which the incumbent is entitled to all the privileges of the institution free of charge and to an annual compensation of $200 (page 3) This appointment is made to continue two years, and I am fully of the opinion that your son will do well to avail himself of the opportunities for improvement that it affords and hope that he will conclude to do so.

It gives me pleasure to assure you of his --?-- as a student and his exemplary conduct in every respect duuring the entire term of his connection with Washington College.

I am very respy

your obtservt

R E Lee
