General,
I congratulate you upon new victories - & new titles to the thanks of the country & of the Army.
If you can threaten Baltimore & Washington do so- It may produce an important diversion.
M=Clellan is near - & M=Dowell reported advancing from Fredericksburg.
Your movements depend, of course, upon the enemy=s strength remaining in your neighborhood- Upon that depends the practicability of your advancing to the Potomac - & even crossing it. I know of no hostile force to prevent either.
Most respectfully
Your obt sevt
J. E. Johnston
General
Time would be gained & saved by addressing me always; instead of the government.
