Leroy Hodges Papers
Collection 162
20.4 linear ft.

One of the largest collections in our holdings is that of Leroy Hodges (1888-1944). Hodges, who attended Washington and Lee from 1906 to 1910, was an economist and government official. He was Director of the Budget in Virginia during the administration of Governor E. Lee Trinkle. He served for thirteen years as the managing director of the Virginia State Chamber of Commerce and also held positions briefly in the federal government. The papers (1908-1942) illustrate Hodges' efforts toward the streamlining of Virginia state government. His detailed involvement with the Virginia State Chamber of Commerce is a major topic of the collection. His correspondents included James H. price, Douglas Southall Freeman, John W. Davis and Lady Astor. The collection is valuable for the study of Virginia economic history and politics in the first half of the twentieth century. It includes photographs of Hodges and his family. There is a finding aid to the papers available in Special Collections. Two of Hodges' published works, including one on army ordnance, are in our Alumni Publications collection.

G. William Whitehurst Papers

Whitehurst (b. 1925) was a 1950 graduate of Washington and Lee. He represented the Second Congressional District of Virginia in the United States House of Representatives from 1969 to 1987. His service in the Congress included the time of the Vietnam War, the Watergate scandal, the ABSCAM scandal and the oil crises of the 1970s. The papers are divided broadly into general files, personal files and legislative files. They include letters and other materials sent to Whitehurst by constituents and others along with his replies. Due to the enormous size of the collection the papers housed in Special Collections are a representative statistical sample of the whole. There is a detailed finding aid available for the collection. Also in the collection are Whitehurst's well written congressional diaries covering his eighteen year service in Washington. These diaries go well beyond the scope of his published diaries which are included in our Alumni Publications collection.
